One important step forward…but much more to do
The Mayor announces seed money to create a commissionOn February 28, Mayor Abramson announced his intention to pledge $1 million in seed money for an Affordable Housing Trust Fund. The mayor will ask the Metro Council “to pass an ordinance creating a commission to oversee the Affordable Housing Trust Fund and set rules for its use. This is great and due to the work of Open the Door supporters.
But the commission will make decisions on how to set up the AHTF. The Mayor’s Task Force recommendations are NOT binding on the Commission. We are very close to an AHTF.
We have done great work. Our next step is to make sure the commission adopts the three principles of an effective AHTF: 1) a dedicated, renewable public funding source, 2) an AHTF decision-making governing board with community based representation, 3) a target population that earns less than the 80% of Area Median Income with a 50% set-aside households earning less than 50% AMI. These are the recommendations of the Mayor’s Task Force and endorsed by the Open the Door campaign.
The Open the Door campaign will need to work hard to ensure that the commission codifies our three vital and essential objectives. We will continue to build the necessary support to create a meaningful and financially solid Affordable Housing Trust Fund.
